How are the Replacements doing?
Posted on May 27, 2009
With the abundance of injuries plaguing the Mets, the irregulars get the nod to be the regulars. Here's how the reserves played so far.
First Base
Carlos Delgado - DL, since May 11th
---
Fernando Tatis - 8-38 (.211), 1 HR, 7 RBI, 3 Ks
Jeremy Reed - 4-11 (.364), 0 HR, 0 RBI, 3 Ks
Daniel Murphy - 1-15 (.067), 0 HR, 0 RBI, 4 Ks
Grade: D
The Mets need another big bat, and the absence of Carlos Delgado has shown. The players in the position are struggling, but the Mets are lucky the other players have picked up the slacks.
Shortstop
Jose Reyes - DL, since May 21st
Alex Cora - DL, since May 18th
---
Ramon Martinez - 3-30 (.100), 0 HR, 4 RBI, 6 Ks
Grade: C+
While Ramon has be improving lately, he can't hit, and was pretty poor on the field.
Right Field
Ryan Church - DL, since May 23rd
---
Angel Pagan - 1-9 (.111), 0 HR, 1 RBI, 4 Ks
Fernando Martinez - 0-3 (.000), 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 Ks
Grade: B-
Why B-? Well, Pagan has shown that he can deliver. As he plays CF, for now, he's shown he can be a good leadoff hitting, which is what the Mets needed when Jose went down. Fernando is a good kid, with the arm, the speed, and hopefully, the bat. He needs to show patience at the plate, but once he does, hopefully he can drive the ball and get those runs in.
As you can see. There's not a lot of production around, but it's the regulars who are saving the team more than the irregulars. Players like Gary Sheffield, David Wright, Omir Santos, and Ramon Castro, are saving the team. It just so happens that they got hot, when the other starters got hurt. However, we still need that extra bat, to make our lineup as deadly as it was before.
