A quick check down on the farm.. (Part I)
Posted on May 21, 2009
The Mets need help from the farm system since they're shorthanded with the injuries to Delgado, Cora, and now Reyes. Here's a check on the farm system with a few key players and their stats. I've decided to split up each team by post. The Bisons are up first. No, not M. Bison, the Buffalo Bisons.
AAA - Buffalo Bisons
Fernando Martinez (CF) - We all know his name, and every Met fan has heard his name numerous times. He's doing fairly well in AAA, and especially for his age, he's outstanding. He's been on a power surge lately, hitting three home runs in his last 2 games, and four overall in the past ten games. He's not striking out as much as he used to, but he still isn't picking up the walks. In my opinion, he should be in the big leagues just as a preview. He's a whole lot better than Jeremy Reed, even now.
.287 AVG | 7 HRs | 23 RBI | 2 SB | 13 2B | .340 OBP
Argenis Reyes (2B) - A possible candidate to be called up if and when Jose Reyes goes on the DL. He's still the same A. Reyes. He can't hit consistently, but he will give you great defense when needed. Can he play Short? We have no clue, but if he plays the defense the way we saw last year, he shouldn't have a problem to SS.
.272 AVG | 1 HR | 4 RBI | 5 SB | 4 2B | .385 OBP
Jonathan Malo (2B) - Another defensive player who can't hit fairly well. We got to know Malo in Spring Training where he looked pretty impressive. However in Buffalo, his bat looks rather anemic. He could get called up, but I see Argenis ahead of him just because Argenis can get on base. Oh yeah, Malo was sent down to Binghamton previously just because he couldn't hit a lick.
.174 AVG | 0 HR | 2 RBI | 1 SB | 3 2B | .256 OBP
Dillon Gee (SP) - The top pitcher in AAA at the moment has come around after a shakey start. His only problem, no run support. His previous three starts all resulted in a no decision and two of those starts had him giving up either a run or no runs to score. There's no room for him on the current Mets roster, but if Redding struggles, or Niese struggles, I wouldn't be surprised if Gee gets the call.
1-3 (3.65 ERA) | 42 K | 15 BB | 44.1 IP | 43 H

I'll post the Binghamton Mets post in a few. Check in!
